The exhibition presents the work of 10 young and emerging artists of Bangladesh who have been shortlisted for the first edition of the AIYAA (Aminul Islam Young Artist Award). Named after the late painter and art educator Aminul Islam (1931-2011), the award pays tribute to the legacy of this figure of the Modernist movement in Bangladesh. Although no single recurring theme binds the works on display, a majority of artists exhibited here seem to share an interest for the human body in relation/friction with the vagaries of time and the accidents of life. The vast array of mediums – from ink drawings to object making to video installation - they use is, in itself, a tribute to Aminul Islam relentless advocacy for experimentation and innovation in the practice of the arts.
